Viewed from a very close distance, this 3/4-inch Bigmouth Triplefin's colors are striking. The body is generally translucent, with various colors of pigmentation evident on the outer layers of flesh. Individual scales are distinguishable, though the webbing between the spines of the second dorsal fin is difficult to see.
