Axial muscle anatomy of fish (yellow perch, Perca flavescens, shown). Axial muscles are organized into nested cones that extend across vertebral segments. At the lateral midline they are divided by a horizontal septum into dorsal (epaxial) and ventral (hypaxial) regions.
